The Tools Are Made of Us

A few weeks ago, the Vatican entered the AI conversation in a serious and surprising, nuanced way. Pope Leo XIV released Magnificat Humanitatis, an encyclical focused on artificial intelligence, human dignity, labor, and society. The timing carried symbolic weight: it landed exactly 135 years after Rerum Novarum, the Church's response to the Industrial Revolution.


Our guest this episode has spent more than 20 years at the UN driving social change, and she is asking the question most AI conversations skip entirely. Not what these systems can do, but what kind of world we want to build with them. Dr. Cornelia C. Walter is a professor at the Institute for Global Strategy and Competitiveness and senior fellow at the Sunway Center for Planetary Health in Malaysia. She works with the UN Population Fund in Morocco and Malaysia on national blueprints for pro-social AI, and holds senior fellowships at Harvard's Learning and Innovation Lab, the Center for International Governance Innovation, and Wharton's Neuroscience Initiative. Her seventh book, Artificial Intelligence for Inspired Action, publishes this month.


What the Encyclical Asks of Us

For Cornelia, the significance of Magnificat Humanitatis has little to do with religion and everything to do with timing. It is an invitation to pause and face our own humanity, to move past the old divides between science and spirituality, finance and faith, the material and the immaterial, and start thinking in a more holistic, interconnected way. Without that shift, she argues, the future will not be pro-people, pro-planet, or pro-potential within planetary boundaries.


The parallel to Rerum Novarum is deliberate. Whether this counts as the fourth or fifth industrial revolution, every prior wave was driven by commercial interest alone, and society and the planet are worse for it. None of today's technologies were built with the ambition to make people flourish or to steward the planet sustainably. We cannot expect the technology of tomorrow to be better than the humans of today. It is still garbage in, garbage out, versus values in, values out. That is a choice, made individually and collectively.


AI Is a Mirror

"The tools are made of us," Cornelia wrote in Psychology Today, responding to the encyclical. AI reflects the priorities of the people who design, deliver, and deploy it. If we want a future defined by generosity, kindness, and sustainability, we need a candid look at whether those values are actually shaping our social interplay and institutional regulation today. If they are not, the technology will not save us from ourselves.


That starts with surfacing what we have left uncomfortable and unexamined for too long. Cornelia's A-frame offers four steps: 1. awareness of the status quo; 2. appreciation of the upsides and limitations of both our natural intelligence and our artificial tools; 3. acceptance of those limitations; and 4. accountability, because however sophisticated our tools become, the human user remains responsible for the outcome.


A Dashboard for Pro-Social AI

Pro-social AI describes systems tailored, trained, tested, and targeted to bring out the best in people and planet. Cornelia's pro-social index turns that ambition into something institutions and governments can actually use: a dashboard to map, measure, monitor, and manage the AI systems they are mainstreaming. It takes the often-vague language of "ethical AI" and gives it a steering mechanism, organized around the four Ts of how, and the four Ps of what for, purpose, people, profit, and planet, producing a traffic-light system that flags where adjustment is needed.

The four-by-four logic runs through all of her work, prototyped while she was working in Haiti: aspirations, emotions, thoughts, and sensations at the individual level, and individuals as part of communities, countries, and the planet at the collective level. The point is not to treat each dimension as a separate patchwork, but to understand how they interact.


What stands out about the index is that it does not stop at model performance. It asks what the system creates in the world. That is the question we built this show to ask, and Cornelia's framework puts it at the center in a way we have not seen elsewhere.


The Last Analog Generation

It is easy to get caught measuring the how and forgetting the why, Cornelia says, comparing it to a mechanic so excited about a shiny new hammer that everything starts to look like a nail. Not everything needs AI. When we do use it, we have to reckon with its environmental footprint too. The tools may feel free, but the planetary cost is already far larger than it should be.


Then there is the line that stopped us: we are the last analog generation. The choices we make now shape the algorithmic architecture of tomorrow, and we are navigating a dangerous transition. We have moved past experimenting with AI and deep into integrating it, half a step from reliance, and not far from full-blown addiction. If future generations are going to have a fair shot at their own potential, the work starts now.


From Intelligence to Wisdom

Her new book, Artificial Intelligence for Inspired Action, takes its title seriously. Technology is only as good as the human behind it, and what matters most is people who aspire to reach their own best selves and help others do the same. That requires hybrid intelligence: the complementarity of natural intelligence, a holistic understanding of self, society, people, and planet, and algorithmic intelligence, understanding not just the latest tool but how these tools shape our ability to think, act, and relate to one another autonomously. Double literacy, Cornelia calls it.


The distinction between intelligence and wisdom matters here too. Intelligence is the cognitive side, where human sense-making still vastly outreaches the artificial. Wisdom is what we do with it, anchored again in the why.


Knowing Ourselves First

AI literacy gets enormous investment. Human literacy does not get nearly enough, and Cornelia's work tries to close that gap. Healthy hybrid intelligence requires understanding that neither human nor machine decision-making is perfect, and that our own hardware and software interact in ways we rarely examine: what we ate for lunch, how well we slept, the biases Daniel Kahneman mapped in Thinking, Fast and Slow. Cornelia has read it five times and still is not immune to her own biases. That kind of basic self-knowledge should be taught from kindergarten through the workplace, because if we are interacting with systems built to exploit every one of our weak points, our best protection is understanding ourselves first. On the algorithmic side, literacy has to extend beyond knowing the tools to understanding how they shape us, including the agency decay and cognitive surrender that come with this transition.


Staying Human at Scale

When NGOs and governments scale their work, even with the best intentions, the human element tends to get squeezed out. Cornelia's answer is empowerment paired with a constant reminder that the human being remains accountable, with both the opportunity and the responsibility to shape the algorithmic architecture and the hybrid environment we are building. AI did not fall from the sky. It is man-made, and so is the responsibility for it.


What We Are Protecting

Asked which human capability matters most to protect, Cornelia points to the soul, not as dogma but as aspiration. It is the essence we each carry, the guiding star that pulls us forward when things get dark. It matters individually, and it matters for us as a species.

If We Get This Right

So what becomes possible if we approach this moment consciously and intentionally? Cornelia's answer: an era where every person has the opportunity to fulfill their full potential with environmental dignity. That has never been blocked by a lack of technology. It has been blocked by a lack of human desire and determination. Getting it right this time will not happen because of the technology, and not in spite of it, but with it, and with the aspiration of the people using it.
